Goodbye old friend. FIV blog moves to new home!

Blogger has treated me well, but it's time to move on. Finding Isaac Viel is still alive and well but lives in great new home located at on my website at www.isaacviel.com/blog.

Right place, right time, right equipment

Some off the best images I get are the ones that were unforeseen, unplanned and narrowly missed. This image is on one of those images.

Lately, I have been carrying one of my SLRs with me everywhere I go just in case. Normally, as some of you know, I have at least my cell phone or a small point-and-shoot camera to record random events. The problem with having only having a smaller camera is not always being able to match serendipity with ability to record properly. Sometimes you have the right subject and wrong camera and sometimes you are well prepared to shoot and have nothing inspiring. Some days you have both.

The other day was one of the "you have both" days, and the weather was great to top it off. In the camera world that's like having all the planets in line including pluto.

By chance I had missed the 73 bus, which takes me from school to my car, and normally I would be upset. But the weather was good and the 28 bus would come soon and get me close enough to walk through the park.

I pulled my camera out before I got off the bus. It's still exciting after all this time to just hold it and look at it. When I got off the bus I realized that the sun was in a perfect spot in the sky for shooting – about 45 -/+ degrees from the horizon in winter is my sweet spot.

I walked around for a bit just snapping this and that while making my way toward my car. But it wasn't until I got to the running path at Amazon when I had a thought; I'll just wait here and see who comes by.

I knew, being backlit, that I wanted a silhouette shot of perhaps a runner, but I was open to anything. I did not expect to see these two guys.

I neither know their story nor will I try to make one up. It was just a cool shot. Period. As soon as I pressed the shutter release, I knew that I was in the right place at the right time and was thankful I packed the camera I did.

White House releases official presidential photo

Photobucket

With the inauguration for president-elect Obama coming up soon, hopes are high and history is set to change. One little way that history has already been changed is the medium upon which the official presidential photo was taken. For the first time in history the official photo was taken with a digital camera as opposed to film – quite befitting for a president who addresses the country via youtube. The photo was taken by the recently appointed White House photographer Pete Souza. Since tax money paid for the photo, it's available for download at here. By the way, Pete shoots with Canon. Suck it Nikon fanboys.

I thought Gabe really captured a good representation of the way I work and the things I do. That's me there shooting Mogan Broadley who is the owner/winemaker for Boadley Vineyards in Monroe, Ore. The photos are for a Eugene Magazine's "Meet the Vintner," a quarterly feature about local winemakers.

The photos, which I probably will not post on flickr – I don't post much of my paid work on here – came out great. I am really happy and will be excited to see them in print and also in a publication to which I am new.

I am not exactly sure what issue this will run in, but I am assuming it's the Spring. Pick up a copy if you get the chance to see the fruits of my labor. As for me, I may or may not be enjoying a lovely gift that our host may or may not have given us.

Also, thanks again to Gabe for helping and shooting the BTS shots.

UO in the Snow

Our first snow storm of the winter season. Most people failed to show up to school; however, I did.

While waiting for an update to install on my computer, I grabbed my camera gear and hit campus prepared to capture the mood of Winter break around campus.

The campus had a quiet, solemn feel. There were a few people scuffling about in the snow, mostly employees, and the occasional familyless student stuck on campus with nowhere to go.

The weather outlook is cold and snowy for the week.

Happy Holidays!
